57 days to departure

Well, I haven’t been very good about blogging. My excuses: school work, dad work, life in general. All true but lame. I kept telling myself that the real blogging will happen once we are on our trip. But I think I need to create the habit of writing down my thoughts and impressions now, during our run-up to the trip, to ingrain them.

Although the trip is only 57 days away, we still have lots to do. Many of the big ones are done:

  • house rented: to friends who will mow the lawn, shovel the driveway and feed the cat. How lucky are we?
  • flights booked: with Air Transat on August 9th direct from Montreal to Paris
  • accommodation secured:
*Paris: a small typically Parisian apartment in the 11th arrondissement near the former site of the Bastille
*Alsace: a house for 6 weeks in the small village of Langensoultzbach near the German border
*Côte d’Azure: an apartment in the Winter Palace in the coastal town of Menton, ideally located between Monaco and the Italian border
  • Travel visas: after an unbelievably bureaucratic process we received our travel visas which allow us to stay in Europe for 366 days. Yippee.
  • Shannon has given notice to Nortel. It was nice to be able to say to Nortel that their services wouldn’t be needed after all those layoffs that she avoided.
  • Shopping: we bought a new Nikon D90 camera, new backpacks for the kids, some travel clothing. A few more items to come. MEC here we come.

All that to say…the preparations are coming along. On June 30th, we are all finished work for 14 months. We’ll have a little more than a month to prep the house (still some painting required), pack our stuff, clean the nooks and crannies that haven’t seen a mop in 7 years.

Stick around…there’s more to come.
